Kinetic Op Art

Bi Love, 2022: the three points of view of the work

A work of art is emotion…

… and emotion is what touches our deepest self, our memory.

Bi Love, 2022 — Kinetic Dooble

The artist

Patrick Rubinstein is a French contemporary artist. He is the inventor of the Kinetic Op Art movement.

He belongs to the Op Art and kinetic art movements, combining the technical principles of the optical arts with the theme of figuration in art. The success of this concept often overshadows the diversity of his work, which ranges from colourful figuration to geometric and poetic abstraction.

The origins

Born in Paris in 1960, he grew up in a family with a deep interest in art. His mother passed on her passion for cinema, and his father an inventive mind: it was his father who first introduced him to the techniques of kinetic art.

Recognition

His work is shown in numerous galleries around the world and in museums such as POPA (Porrentruy Optical Art, Switzerland), the Maurice and Paul Marciano Foundation in Los Angeles and the Copelouzos Art Museum in Athens.

Work made of folded strips in the studio

03 — Triple

Three images,
a gaze in motion

The “Triple” process consists of three images, one central and two lateral. The side views are created by strips inserted perpendicular to the central image. They offer two distinct images, on either side at 45°.

02 — Dooble

A double image
that reveals itself

From the front, these creations present a double image, with the two photographs overlapping. Seen from different angles, the illusion is striking: only one of the two images appears. And so the three-dimensional “Dooble” concept was born.

01 — Cut, paste, fold

The creation of
Kinetic Op Art

His process is based on an assemblage of strips on a pyramidal support. He cuts two images into strips, attaches them to a pyramidal structure and then folds them accordion-style to create works in relief.

Love monumental · 2023

The artist returns to his favourite theme, the word “LOVE”, which he turns into a monumental work by creating a giant kinetic puzzle.

“Love Monumental” is conceived as a three-image painting, in which every element fits together to form an impressive overall work.

Exception series

Gold,
the great
protagonist

Gold holds a special place at the heart of the artist’s explorations. Carrying a strong symbolic charge, it is the main protagonist of his work.

The yellow metal sublimates his paintings, bringing exceptional luminosity and a new kinetic dimension by creating new optical effects. Thanks to the gold leaf, the perception of the works changes with the intensity of the light, its variation and its direction.

Work from the Exception series

“If you fold a photo evenly along parallel lines, you get an interesting visual effect depending on whether you look at it from the right, the front or the left.”
